APPROACH

For Carey, counselling is first and foremost a relational activity. Good counselling outcomes start with the development of a strong therapeutic relationship. Carey draws upon excellent interpersonal skills to build strong working relationships with his clients. He is known for being warm, caring, and empathic as well as for providing a safe and accepting counselling environment for the people he works with.

Carey’s approach is also evidence-based. He is knowledgeable and skillful in the practice of psychological counselling and is engaged in ongoing professional development. Carey draws from a variety of evidence-based approaches (see list below) and does not apply a “cookie cutter approach” (i.e., one approach fits all) to his practice. He knows that people are unique and that counselling research supports a flexible application of counselling interventions. Carey is skillful in selecting approaches that are well matched with his clients and the issues that they bring to counselling.
